CARMINE — The Round Top-Carmine High School volleyball team swept BVCHEA High School in three sets Aug.
25 in Carmine by a final score of 25-7, 25-21, 25-22.
After dominating the first set, BVCHEA stepped their game up and made the second and third sets a lot closer, but the Cubettes were able to do just enough to hold them off in three sets.
“We really need to tie all three together,” said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn. “Start strong, stay strong in the mid- dle, and then finish strong.
They came out super strong and I’m just proud of them for taking care of business and maintaining energy on a hot day. Super awesome group to be around. Lots of energy. That’s a big win.”
Cubettes sophomore hitter Caydan Nelius had five kills to go along with four blocks for the match. She also had the set and match-winning kill in the third set.
“Overall, all the hitters and myself are trying to swing more,” Nelius said. “Find open spots on the court and just stay confident."
Round Top came out strong
in the first set and took a 19-5 lead before scoring the final four points in a row on three mistakes from BVCHEA and an ace from junior Madison Markwardt to win it 25-8.
The second set was a lot closer as both teams went back and forth and the biggest lead the Cubettes had was at 16-12 after another ace from Markwardt. A ball out of bounds from Round Top put BVCHEA back within one at 18-17, then Round Top resurged to their four-point lead towards the end of the set on a few kills and a few mistakes from BVCHEA to win the set 25-21.
The third set was very similar as the two teams traded punches again and even more so in this set as Round Top didn’t extend their lead to as many as three points until the end of the set.
After a ball in the net from the Cubettes tied it at 19, two more aces from Markwardt and a final kill from Nelius helped win the set and match 25-22.
