Schulenburg downed by Burton in three sets

BURTON — The Schulenburg High School volleyball team was defeated in three sets by Burton High School Sept. 3 at Panthers Gym in Burton by a final score of 23-25, 20-25, 20-25.

As each set was close, Burton was able to score just enough in the three sets to secure the sweep.

“I was proud of the way we played today," said Schulenburg head volleyball coach Donald Zapalac.

“We’re coming off a couple losses over the weekend and another one on Tuesday. Playing a really good Burton team. For us to battle like that, stay in it. We played some really good defense for the most part. Really looking forward to the district season. I was really proud of the way we played tonight. They’re a really, really good team.

If they’re not at the state tournament this year, I'll be totally shocked." Burton took a 5-0 lead in the first set on a couple mis -

takes from Schulenburg, two aces, and a kill. This

was followed by Schulen-

burg cutting the lead to 1210 on a bunch of kills and a few mistakes from Burton.

The Lady Panthers were able to stretch their lead a little, but it was pretty much a back and forth battle as Schulenburg was able to hang in with a bunch of different kind of points, which eventually led to two balls in a row in the net for Schulenburg to win the set for Burton 25-23.

Burton had a decent sized lead in the second set that made way to Schulenburg keeping it a close battle and even getting it to within one point at 17-16 after an ace from junior setter Jenna Guentert. Burton was able to capitalize on some big points with a few mistakes from Schulenburg and a mix of different kinds of points to win the set 2520. The third set was very much back and forth until later when the Lady Panthers surged ahead 18-13 after a kill, which forced Schulenburg to call a timeout.

Burton kept a similar lead for the remainder of the set and notched two kills in a row to win the set and match at 25-20.
