BELLVILLE — The Horticulture Committee of Austin County is selling bare-root strawberry plants to help raise funds for scholarships. S Since 2023, the Horticulture Committee of Austin County has supported nine youth with $8,500 in scholarships for graduating seniors and college students who are past graduates from an Austin County school majoring in Horticulture or a related field.
Strawberry plants will be bare-root and in bundles of five.
There will be two differ- ent varieties offered, Ruby June and Camarosa; both are zoned for this area.
Camarosa is known for being high-yielding, producing large berries, and ripening in spring. Camarosa is an increasingly popular variety with commercial growers in Texas. It is widely adapted to many growing regions.
Ruby June, a strong short- day cultivar and grower favor ite. Does well in the Southern regions of Texas. Very sweet, dark, flavorful berries; medi um to large plants.
The committee is offering a pre-sale through Sept. 30 for $9 per bundle of five. After the pre-sale, bundles will increase to $10 per bundle of five.
Order forms should be submitted to the Austin Coun- ty Extension Office located at 800 E Wendt St. in Bellville. Strawberries will arrive mid-to-late October, and all pre-order customers will be notified when they arrive.
Pickup will be at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church Pavilion at 936 S. Front St. in Bellville.
