ALTAIR — The Rice High School football team was defeated by Edna High School Sept. 18 at Rice Veteran’s Memorial Stadium by a final score of 27-14.
A back and forth game for it’s entirety led to Edna scoring some late touchdowns to seal the win.
“Losing the quarterback didn’t help,” said Rice head football coach Brad Dumont. “I felt like we kind of drug around a little bit.
They got a good football team. 11’s a really good, solid running back. We didn’t tackle very well and we had a couple turnovers that probably could’ve changed the first half of the game. We could’ve been up, I think, going in just as easy as anything else.”
Rice struck first at the 32 second mark in the first quarter on a pass from Kordae Johnson to Glenn Mills for about 10 yards to take a 7-0 lead, which were the only points of the first quar ter.
Edna responded at the very end of the second quarter with a 25-yard touchdown and an extra point that hit the cross bar made it 7-6 in favor of Rice at halftime.
Edna made it 14-7 at the 7:04 mark in the third quar ter on a touchdown near the goal line and a successful two-point conversion made it 14-7, then Rice responded with a touchdown from DJ Amos a few minutes later to tie it at 14 and for the final points of the third quarter.
Edna ran for a long touchdown with 11:23 to go in the fourth quarter,
which led to them scoring one more touchdown at the 1:19 mark and missed extra
point put it at 27-14.
Edna was able to close out the game on an interception a few seconds later and proceeded to take a knee to win it 27-14.
