TGCA Pre-Season Volleyball Poll marks three area teams top 10
After making it all the way to the state tournament last year, Bellville (Class 4A), Columbus (Class 3A), and Schulenburg High School (Class 2A) volleyball teams have cracked the top 10 in the TGCA (Texas Girls Coaches Association) 2023 Pre-Season poll. This comes as no surprise with stellar seasons in ‘22, along with elite personnel still remaining for all three teams.

Reese adds to already impressive resume; lands on Maxwell Award Watch List
Bellville native and all-time leading rusher Richard Reese is swiftly becoming one of the nation’s most coveted running backs in college football. Reese was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List July 31 prior to his second season at Baylor University, which starts in about a month. The Maxwell Award is given out to the best player in college football for that season.

Vets fall to the Jackrabbits
LA GRANGE – The Weimar Vets travel to the La Grange Fairgrounds Ballpark for the final regular season game against the Serbin Jackrabbits, who dominated the game with a final score of 11- 1. Brady Henke led the offense with two singles. Cody Barrett had a single and the lone RBI. Brady Bippert collected a single. Clay Barton continued to cover the outfield with another diving catch defensively. Trey Daniels gunned down a runner attempting to steal second.

Schulenburg High School football is looking to bounce back after going winless last season and the player with the keys to lead the comeback charge is none other than senior quarterback Tyler Ryba. Ryba is arguably the best athlete at Schulenburg with his speed, quickness, and pure athleticism.

Round Top-Carmine’s Weishuhn goes from multi-sport athlete to multi-sport coach
Round Top-Carmine coach Catie Weishuhn calls the shots in track, basketball, and volleyball as head coach and has had plenty of success. Weishuhn also played multiple sports at Giddings High School and ultimately pursued softball, pursuing it so much that she ended up playing college ball at Blinn College, then transferred to St. Edwards University in Austin and became a volunteer assistant after her playing career. Weishuhn played two years at each school.

Bellville's Fishbeck, Linseisen appear on TSWA 4A All-State Baseball Team
Tyler Fishbeck and Blake Linseisen of Bellville baseball have graced their names on the Blue Bell/TSWA Class 4A All-State Baseball Team. Both of these players were seniors and were a crucial part in helping the Brahmas post another stellar record of 21-10-1 last season.

Round Top-Carmine volleyball has had a ton of success in recent years and has been on the cusp of a state tournament birth. They’ve had the personnel, but they’ve also had great coaching from head coach Catie Carney.

Interesting teams to watch this volleyball season: Brazos
Lady Cougar volleyball had a nice season last year and should be just about as good this fall. Brazos loses five se niors to graduation with one of those seniors being their best player, outside hitter Haven Harris. Good thing for Brazos, they are led by head coach Amanda Hatton, who holds her players accountable.

Weimar, Flatonia, Fayetteville Grasp All-State Baseball Honors
The Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association named players from three area teams in Weimar, Flatonia, and Fayetteville to their Class 1A and 2A All-State Baseball Teams. Appearing on the list in 1A from Fayetteville is sophomore second baseman Easton Jaeger (First Team), senior catcher Logan Fritsch (Second Team), junior third baseman Keagan Supak (Second Team), junior outfielder Reid Gross (second team), and sophomore pitcher Chance Konvicka (honorable mention).

The Flatonia High School baseball team went on a nice run last season and there’s no reason why they can’t have the same season, if not better, next spring. While the Bulldogs graduate eight seniors, they’ll have returners such as incoming juniors Beck Zimmerman (catcher) and Titan Targac (pitcher).

Unfortunately, Fayetteville’s star player and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball commit Brooklyn Jaeger went down with an ACL injury during the heat of the postseason.
