Faith Academy Lady Knights takes State crown
The Faith Academy High School girls basketball team recently earned a state title after winning four games en route to the state championship victory on Feb. 17. Players who stepped up big for the Lady Knights were Rachel Kuespert and Ja'Kasia Ragston, who scored in double figures for the majority of the tournament. As Faith Academy won their final game by a score of 34-4, the state trophy was ul timately won by their defense.

BELLVILLE – The Bellville High School boys basketball team faced off against Royal High School where the Brahmas fought hard all game to send the match into overtime on a buzzer beater, which led to dominating the overtime period for a 72-60 win at Brahmas Gym February 10. “I felt coming in that I just liked our matchup,” said Bellville head boys basketball coach Mason Loiodice.

SCHULENBURG – The Schulenburg High School boys basketball team went up against Flatonia High School in a barn burner that came down to the last shot in overtime. Schulenburg’s execution throughout the game was near perfect and Flatonia held their own with big shots and productive offense. “Flatonia is a great team,” said Schulenburg head boys basketball coach Rich Hoogendoorn.

Flatonia hires Brent Mascheck as new athletic director/ head football coach
FLATONIA – The Flatonia Bulldogs superintendent Chris Sodek and his committee narrowed his list of athletic director and head football coach candidates down to six people after former athletic director and head football coach Chris Freytag departed a few months ago. Sodek and his committee ended up choosing Brent Mascheck to take on the new role. “We just felt best about Coach Mascheck’s past history,” said Sodek.

Fayetteville boys surging as playoffs approach
Lions boys basketball has been dominant all year with playmakers under second-year head coach Jake Diggs. Diggs seems to have the ultimate chemistry with this team while having players who know how to put the ball in the hoop. Some Fayetteville ballers include Keagan Supak, who’s one of the best athletes at Fayetteville, sharp-shooter Karson Corn, and gifted sophomore guard Easton Jaeger.

Schulenburg boys survive at home vs Bloomington
SCHULENBURG – The Schulenburg High School boys basketball team had the upper hand in a barn burner Jan. 31 at Shorthorns Gym and defeated Bloomington High School by a finals score of 50-42 in a game that went into overtime. The Shorthorns jumped out to a big lead early, but Bloomington was able to hang in the game with their shot-making until Schulenburg ultimately sealed the deal.

LA GRANGE – Leopard boys hoops put on a great showing against a solid Giddings High School team Feb. 3 at Leopards Gym by defeating the Buffaloes with a final score of 54-27. Giddings made some nice plays and moves to the basket, but La Grange’s offense was at near perfection with their drives to the rim and shot making.

SCHULENBURG – Lady Horns basketball was defeated at Shorthorns Gym January 24 by Ganado High School with a final score of 38-33. Schulenburg possessed a double-digit lead late in the first half that slowly dwin- dled down throughout the contest due to Ganado’s shot making and clutch plays, resulting in a victo ry for the Lady Indians. Schulen- burg head girls basketball coach Phillip Eddins declined to com ment on the game.

GIDDINGS – The La Grange High School girls soccer team went down to Giddings High School January 23 at Buffaloes Field by a final score of 5-0. Giddings scored two goals in the first half and didn’t look back, scoring three more in the second half with their high-powered offense. "I think that we're just still kind of trying to figure things out in some areas,” said La Grange head girls soccer coach Lauren Hubbert.
