Columbus Time Capsule buried until 2073
COLUMBUS - The fifth graders from Columbus Elemen - tary School and St. Anthony's School came together on May 11 to bring together the items buried in the next time capsule. Each class made a collection of items to be encapsulated for the next 50 years for citizens of Colum - bus in 2073. Some of the many things put in the metal box were scrapbooks with pictures and articles, paraphernalia from Co - lumbus's bicentennial, almost a year's worth of newspapers from The Houston Chronicle, The Col - orado County Citizen, The Ban - ner Press Newspaper, and even a couple of iPhones.

FSB donates to St. Michael School
Fayette Savings Bank made a donation to St. Michael School in Weimar from its School Debit Card Program. FSB customers who chose to have the SMS Swords debit card contribute toward the program indirectly, as each time they make a purchase using the card, a percentage of each swipe goes to SMS. Donations are being made to all of the schools FSB has school debit cards for - La Grange, Flatonia, Schulenburg and Weimar ISDs, as well as Sacred Heart School in La Grange. St. Rose School in Schulenburg and St. Michael School in Weimar.

Columbus KCs donate $5,000 to the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church
A $5,000.00 donation was recently deposited into the Matching Funds Campaign account at Fayette Savings Bank for the ben- efit of the Queen of the Holy Ro sary Catholic Church in Hostyn, rebuilding fund by the Columbus KC Council 2971 from proceeds raised from their March 26 pork steak drive-through dinner.

On July 3, 1957, Philo T. Farnsworth appeared as a guest on the popular game show I’ve Got a Secret. As none of the panelists guessed Philo’s secret, he won the game, taking home $80 cash and a carton of Winston cigarettes. What was Philo’s secret? At the age of 14, he invented television. During his lifetime, this was his only TV appearance.

WEIMAR – Nothing comes between rural fun time and barbecue. Gedenke could have been a washout with the heavy rains that whipped through on the morning of Gedenke on May 13. However, the barbecue pits kept smokin’ and the kids and kidsat- heart came out as soon as the sun peeked from the clouds.

Theatrical play pays tribute to Columbus
RESS COLUMBUS –The historic Stafford Opera House in Columbus had a full house on May 7, when several hundred people attended another celebration for the Columbus bicentennial birthday. The gathering was a birthday party with a play, a beautiful cake, and a punch! The play was appropriately titled, 'Happy Birthday, Columbus!' It was set as a fifth-grade classroom with students giving reports about the history of Columbus and some Texas history. It featured local actors such as Mayor Lori An Gobert as the principal, Dr. Kirk Anderson as the superintendent, and Mark Candela as the teacher. The fid - gety and silly fifth-grade students were played by Ann Butler, Ester Chandler, Gary Chandler, John Crews, John Isbell, Shirley Isbell, Steve McCullough, Kathy Salguero, James Yearwood, and Bob Stiles with his dog, Beamer.

Colorado County Auditor Michelle Lowrance accepted a certificate of achievement on May 8 presented by Colorado County Judge Ty Prause during the Colorado County Commissioners Court in Columbus. The certificate was presented to Colorado County for Achievement of Excellence in Financial Reporting. It was presented to Colorado County for its Annual Comprehensive Financial report for the fiscal year ending Dec 31, 2021. The award read in part, 'We are pleased to notify you of this certificate of Achievement. This is the highest level of achievement for governmental financial reporting.'

Two more murals to be completed this week
COLUMBUS – Anyone driving around Columbus these days must have seen one or two new murals going up in the Downtown area. The first is on the side of the Tri-County Realty - Double G Realty Group building on Milam Street across from the County Courthouse. The other is at the entrance to the newly named “Artist Alley,” in the 500 block of Walnut Street.

Fayette Community Foundation presents $40,000 grant to Fayette County EMS Station
LA GRANGE – The Fayette Community Foundation (FCF) is pleased to announce that it administered a $40,000 designated grant on behalf of an anonymous donor to the Fayette County EMS on April 12. Mental Health Awareness Month is a very important focus for Colorado County because there are a good number of citizens who are living miserable lives with Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Suicidal Thoughts, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Substance Addictions, Eating Disorders, lack of hope, lack of joy, medications that aren’t working and lack of money or transportation in order to receive treatment.
