BELLVILLE - The Austin County Sheriff's Office has been awarded funds through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Impaired Driving Mobilization (IDM) Program. This will allow the sheriff's office to provide increased patrols within portions of unincorporated Austin County, over the holidays.

Money laundering couple arrested
Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on the morning of Dec. 14 around 9:20 a.m., Drug Interdiction Investigator David Smith conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10 at the 663 Mile Marker on a 2015 white Jeep Cherokee SUV for a traffic violation. Upon contact with the driver, several criminal indicators were observed. Smith was given consent to search the vehicle, which was occupied by a male, his wife, and their juvenile son.

Deputy Santa comes to Colorado County
COLUMBUS – Deputy Santa came to the Colorado County Fairgrounds in Columbus on Dec. 16 and had a steady stream of kids and kids-at-heart take pictures with Santa. The kids received Christmas presents after a visit with Santa. All went jolly well with most of the children. Some took exception to the man in red and some took equal exception to a ne’er do well, the Grinch.

Property tax cuts go into effect
A total of $18 billion in property tax cuts were approved by more than 80% of voters in the November general election and should be reflected in property tax bills that are due by Jan. 31. The cuts come in the form of increased home exemptions, lower school district rates, and limiting the amount property appraisals can rise.

Naughty or nice?
One thing I can say for sure for this year is when Santa asks me if I have been naughty or nice. I want to preface my answer with, "I did try!" Well, I thought about trying, which is what counts. At least "they" say it's the thought that counts. I can harken back to my youngster days when I was nice or Santa would take me away on Christmas Eve night, but that happened to my brother, so there is that.
