‘If I could turn back time:’ A look back at 2018

A fond farewell …

EDITOR’S NOTE: Cher sings “If I could turn back time.” The Banner Press Newspaper is going to “turn back time” over the next two issues to take a look back at 2018. In its first installment on Jan. 3, The Banner Press Newspaper focused on January through April. In today’s issue, May-August will be highlighted followed by September-December Jan. 17.

The Texas Bankers Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Texas Bankers Association, will honor William H. “Bill” Harrison Jr. of Eagle Lake with the 50-Year Banker Award during TBA’s 134th Annual Convention on May 4 in Houston. This prestigious award honors bankers with a half century or more of service and dedication to the banking industry. Harrison grew up on a ranch near Columbus. He received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Texas A&M University in 1962. He served two years in the U.S. Army as an air defense artillery officer and four years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

THE 2018 COLUMBUS Independent School District Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor recipient is Anthony Marie “Tony” Truchard. He was born on July 29, 1938, in Sealy. Born into a large family with six brothers and sisters, he was taught at a young age how to cultivate the land. Truchard graduated from Columbus High School as valedictorian in 1957 and enrolled in the University of Texas earning a degree in chemical engineering in 1963. When the Truchard family immigrated from Lyon, France, in 1887, they established a vineyard in Colorado County. It did not survive prohibition and the Texas heat. An interest in viticulture ran through his veins and he soon worked with soil and grape experts to plant a vineyard. The grapes were raised and sold to neighboring wineries for several years. By 1989, Truchard Vineyards had its own label. Truchard stopped practicing medicine and focused on this thriving business. Truchard Wines Chardonnay was named among the best 100 wines in the world by Wine Spectator in 1994, 1997, 2002 and 2003, and has since continued to win awards.
