Commissioners voted to discontinue free installation of culvert pipes

Fayette County Commissioners voted to discontinue the free installation of culvert pipes for landowners along county roads at a meeting held last Thursday at the Fayette County Courthouse in La Grange.

Previously, landowners were only responsible for purchasing the culvert pipe. Commissioners would determine what size culvert pipe should be used, the landowner would purchase it, and county crews would provide gravel and labor to install the pipe.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom brought up the issue in response to increasing requests from landowners in unincorporated areas. At the meeting, commissioners said road and bridge crews have a difficult time keeping up with all the culverts that need to be installed. In one case, a landowner with property on Goering Road asked the county to install seven culvert pipes so that the land can be subdivided and sold into smaller lots.

“We’re getting inundated with these, and its costing us about $1,000 a culvert,” McBroom said. “I’m in favor of the landowner putting them in at our discretion.”
