The American Civil War came to a conclusion with Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in April, 1865. Shortly thereafter, the process of Federal Reconstruction, which included the creation of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands—more commonly called the Freedmen’s Bureau—was established, and ultimately had a couple of offices in the Tri-County area, including one in Columbus.
