Baseball teams that will keep their mojo: Flatonia
The Flatonia High School baseball team went on a nice run last season and there’s no reason why they can’t have the same season, if not better, next spring. While the Bulldogs graduate eight seniors, they’ll have returners such as incoming juniors Beck Zimmerman (catcher) and Titan Targac (pitcher).

Weimar, Flatonia, Fayetteville Grasp All-State Baseball Honors
The Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association named players from three area teams in Weimar, Flatonia, and Fayetteville to their Class 1A and 2A All-State Baseball Teams. Appearing on the list in 1A from Fayetteville is sophomore second baseman Easton Jaeger (First Team), senior catcher Logan Fritsch (Second Team), junior third baseman Keagan Supak (Second Team), junior outfielder Reid Gross (second team), and sophomore pitcher Chance Konvicka (honorable mention).

Interesting teams to watch this volleyball season: Brazos
Lady Cougar volleyball had a nice season last year and should be just about as good this fall. Brazos loses five se niors to graduation with one of those seniors being their best player, outside hitter Haven Harris. Good thing for Brazos, they are led by head coach Amanda Hatton, who holds her players accountable.

Round Top-Carmine volleyball has had a ton of success in recent years and has been on the cusp of a state tournament birth. They’ve had the personnel, but they’ve also had great coaching from head coach Catie Carney.

Interesting teams for fall 2023: Fayetteville volleyball
The Fayetteville High School volleyball team went on another nice run last year, but it wasn’t as nice as bringing home the state crown in 2021. Unfortunately, Fayetteville’s star player and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball commit Brooklyn Jaeger went down with an ACL injury during the heat of the postseason.

Brazos football poised for another big season
The Brazos High School foot ball team shocked a lot of people last year with their 9-4 overall record and a winning mentality after going 2-9 the previous year. As they will graduate one of their best overall players Bryson Bennett, who happens to play quar- terback, Brazos will be able to fill the void with not only coaching, but players who are coachable.

What to expect from Flatonia: Just good football
Bulldogs football had one of their best seasons in a while last year under head coach Chris Freytag. As Freytag went on to take another job non-football related, incoming head coach Brent Mascheck will take over the reigns of head football coach and athletic director. Freytag had tons to do with Flatonia’s success last year, but the Bulldogs breeding of solid athletes across the board will keep this team in respectable form this fall.

Bellville native Emmanuel Sanders notches SMU Hall of Fame bid
Bellville High School football alum and former NFL star Emmanuel Sanders will soon be inducted into the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Hall of Fame. The date of his induction will be on September 15 and Sanders was a machine from his high school career all the way into his pro career, playing for five NFL teams and reaching two Super Bowls, one being a win at Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning as his quarterback.

Weimar softball senior pitcher Reagan Wick has earned a selection for the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Softball Super Elite Team for 2022-2023. Wick is committed to Colorado State University to play softball next year after leading her team to a state championship win and the team’s third-straight state tournament appearance.

As volleyball season approaches, there are certain teams in the area that have winning formula and are worth noting for evaluation, and La Grange volleyball fits right in that category. The Lady Leopards had a very talented bunch in 2022 with players such as University of Louisiana at Lafayette volleyball commit Maddi Fritz and middle hitter Camille Gonzalez.

Flatonia’s Titan Targac and Bellville’s Tyler Fishbeck earned recognition of the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Super Elite Team for the 2023 season. Targac was lights out from the mound all season long and Fishbeck’s power is a force to be reckoned with at the plate.

Bellville volleyball poised for another big year
The Bellville High School volleyball team is known for making the state tournament and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them go again this fall. Brahmanette volleyball is led by hall of fame coach Susan Brewer, who has nothing short of a powerhouse running at Bellville. Brewer was inducted to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame last summer, has been to multiple state tournaments, and does it all with pure class.

What to expect from La Grange football this fall
Leopards football is going through a lot of big changes as the ’23-’24 school year approaches. La Grange recently hired Kyle Cooper as their athletic director and head football coach while graduating two division one football players in Jaren Woods (Baylor) and Bravion Rogers (Texas A&M). With Woods and Rogers being two huge losses, the Cooper hiring brings optimism to a new-look Leopards team.
