WALDECK - The Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) has decided to discontinue serving food as a drive-thru format. Now the Waldeck food truck will have food distribution as a walk-up method. Volunteers will distribute the food from tables. Every client needs to bring their own sturdy reusable bags and boxes. A few wagons will be furnished by CTFB, but if the client has their own wagon, please bring it. Waldeck food truck is on third Saturdays of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. The 2023 dates are: Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16.

Gabler named Cut Above recipient
Debbi Gabler is Colorado Valley Quilt Guild's (CVQG) newest 'Cut Above' recipient. Gabler is a charter member and has been with the guild since the beginning. Over the years she has helped with the raffle quilts, grant writing, charity quilts and anything that was asked of her. Her true passion is the Quilts Of Valor Program. Gabler is helping the community and surrounding counties give back to some of the most deserving in the communities in the way she knows best. Congratulations, Debbi Gabbler. You are truly 'A Cut Above.'

Texas Quilt Museum director hosts CVQG
LA GRANGE - Deborah Bradley, the director at the Texas Quilt Museum, graciously hosted the Colorado Valley Quilt Guild at the museum. Bradley's enthusiasm and love for the exhibits and the building's history were inspiring. From the current Exhibit 'All Creatures Great and Small' to the quilts that were over 100 years old, the galleries were filled with beauty and fine art. Her vision of future events and renewing old ones will help the museum grow and CVQG is proud to be a part of it.

Opry show will be tribute to the late great Johnny Bush
LA GRANGE - Justin Trevino will headline this month's Fayette County Country Music Club Opry special tribute to the late and great Johnny Bush on Monday, Oct. 16 at the La Grange KC Hall in La Grange. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00 p.m. Trevino grew up while artists like Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall and Justin Tubb were still commonly heard on the air, and he shared their appreciation for the country shuffle. By the time he was 13, he had formed his own band, Sunset Country. The group played honky tonks in and around Austin. Four years later, he landed the gig he wanted most: leading the Sunday afternoon jam session at Harry Weiss' Red Eye Saloon. He knew that his idol, Johnny Bush, sometimes came to sit in. One day after Harry Weiss heard Trevino singing "Whiskey River", Bush's signature song, he remarked how much he sounded like Bush. He promised to introduce the two of them and made good on that promise a couple of weeks later. Trevino explained that he was singing that afternoon and Johnny got up on the stage and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen I'm a little under the weather and I am hoarse and can't sing. I have been told that this young man knows all my songs. What I am gonna do is sit here and play lead guitar and he is going to sing my songs. So you can look at me and listen to him. Trevino started with "Undo the Right" and by the time he finished 45 minutes later, he and Bush were fast friends. Bush always considered Trevino to be like a son to him, and he quickly told people "Justin was my biggest fan until I heard him sing. Then I became his." In the early 90's while continuing to perform with his own band Trevino played for Cornell Hurd and later also with Darrel McCall. In 1994, while still continuing to do shows on his own and with other bands, he began a nine-year run as a "Bandolero" in Johnny Bush's band. He played bass and sang harmony throughout the nine years. He also opened the shows with 45 minutes as lead vocalist before Bush came on stage. In Texas country music circles, it is a huge source of pride for musicians to be able to say they have been a Bandolero. For Trevino, though, it was not just about the thrill of playing with a Texas legend who was also his idol, mentor and good friend.

Murder in New Liberty
RESS COLUMBUS – Local girls, the Solace sisters, must come to terms with their pasts with each other and themselves as they careen headlong into a series of murders in the small town of New Liberty. Alexa Solace, played by award-winning actress, producer, and writer, Marissa Falsone, is the left-behind younger sister who is a wild child and carries a grudge for being left behind by her older sister, Austin Police Detective Simone Solace, played by Kelly Dealyn. Dealyn brought home a Best Supporting Actress award at an indepen- dent Toronto film festival. Finding So - lace is an independent film set in a small town called New Liberty.

SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg football won their third game of the season Sept. 29 at Shorthorns Field by defeating Hearne High School with a final score of 10-0. The Shorthorns defense was stellar and they mustered just enough offense to seal a win on homecoming night. “We’re not turned around yet,” said Schulenburg head football coach Luke Hobbs.
