Autism Awareness Month and Community
COLUMBUS – Destiny Psencik was present to represent the Turtle Wing Foundation during the regular meeting of the Colorado County Commissioner's Court on Feb. 27 in Columbus. The court made a proclamation for the month of April 2023 as Autism Awareness Month in Colorado County. Psencik is the executive director of the Turtle Wing Foundation which serves as a resource hub to connect families who have children with learning challenges with the services and support they need to be successful. Psencik said, 'Autism awareness is near and dear to our hearts.' She continued, 'We want to create a culture of awareness and acceptance. ' Turtle Wing serves all of Colorado, Fayette and Lavaca counties.

Court St. Roch of Mentz CDA donates to Columbus Food Pantry
Court St. Roch of Mentz Catholic Daughters (CDA) recently presented a check for $2,000 to Columbus Food Pantry. Austin County takes ecstasy off streets
The Austin County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10 at the 722 westbound mile marker on March 15. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Caron Howling, 46, of Channelview.

Francis Truchard: Longest serving Justice of the Peace laid to rest
Justice of Peace Francis Truchard, 81, passed away on March 8, 2023. Truchard will be remembered for many things: a devoted husband, a loving father, a grandfather and a friend to all, even those who fell on the wrong side of the law.

Movie Night at the Lyric
FLATONIA – Jumping’ and jivin’ all night long! The Happy Tails Movie Night at the Lyric was a success. The '50s-themed event was held March 9 at the Lyric Theater in Flatonia. All proceeds benefitted the Janssen Ani mal Shelter which serves all of Fayette County.

Flatonia boys basketball comes up short vs La Poynor in UIL State Tournament
SAN ANTONIO – Bulldogs boys hoops competed in the UIL boys state basketball tournament March 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio and were defeated by La Rue La Poynor High School with a final score of 66- 43. Flatonia couldn’t get much of anything going on offense while La Poynor made baskets from distance and took advantage of the Bulldogs mistakes.

Number of area athletes qualify for State Powerlifting
A bunch of powerlifters from the area have qualified for the state powerlifting tournament, which will be held March 24 and 25 at the at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. Area schools that will represent at the state tournament are Brazos, Columbus and Flatonia. Five girls qualifying from Brazos are Marlena Nunn (1st in regionals) 259+ weight class - squat-430, bench press-215; and dead lift-340 - totaling 985; Sara Rincon-Morales (1st in region - als) 123 weight class - squat-265, bench press-130, and dead lift-240-totaling 635; Tiona Steward (1st in regionals) in the 220 weight class - squat-380; bench press-170, and dead lift-370-totaling 920; Jessica Ramos (2nd in regionals) in the 165 weight class - squat-270, bench press-145, and dead lift-305-totaling 720; and Lily Ber - trand (2nd in regionals) in the 105 weight class - squat-215, bench press-110, and dead lift-215-total - ing 540. La Grange holds off Rockdale in boys soccer with late goal
LA GRANGE – The La Grange High School boys soccer team defeated Rockdale High School March 7 at Leopards Field in La Grange by a final score of 2-0. The Leopards scored an ear- ly goal in the first 12 minutes of the game, then kept their cushion with their defense throughout the game and added another goal in the last minute to put the icing on the cake.

Everyone loves a parade
COLUMBUS – The Columbus FFA parade jumped off on time on March 4, in downtown Columbus. Between the flags and the horses were floats, tractors and trailers, and firetrucks some filled with kids and adults throw ing candy to eager crowd. La Grange Leopard musicians advance
SMITHVILLE – The La Grange Leopard band released the names of the musicians who participated in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest in Smithville. Out of 46 Leopard contestants, 31 will be advancing to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest that will be held Memorial Day Weekend. Those advancing to state are Class I Soloists Jose Estrada, trumpet, Westin Smith, Euphonium, Trey Dalton, Marimba, Josh Little, Marimba, Gabriel Vega, Marimba and Juan Zuniga, Marimba.
