A Very Bad Smell

A Very Bad Smell

Of course, we should have known something was wrong. The nice thing about living in our new condo is that we don’t have the responsibilities of a standalone home. There is no yard to rake, no snow to shovel. There is someone at the front desk who will take in our mail and even water our plants. We were so pleased that we could leave for an extended trip to Mexico without these worries. But then, we got a notice from our electric company that indicated our electric bill was very low. In fact, it was almost nonexistent. “Well, we’re not using any electricity!” I said to my husband, Peter, as he read the notice. “The refrigerator would still use some,” Peter said.“There must be something wrong with the meter.” I try not to invite unnecessary worries. Sometimes this leads to problems. This time, it did.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

“Columbus is known as the Home of Live Oaks and Live Folks”, a motto that has stayed true in describing both the timeless natural beauty of the town as well as the vibrant hospitality of its inhabitants.” (a direct quote from the website of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce). If you are heading to La Grange or Brenham from Columbus, you will pass a huge, 200+-year-old oak tree standing in the intersection with its branches reaching over the road on all sides. There is also a historical marker noting the centennial founding of Colorado County. I moved to Columbus 31 years ago. I was fascinated with the history of my new home. I learned that Columbus was known for over ‘100 1sts’ in our history. The more I learned, the more I was impressed….. and interested! Eventually, someone mentioned the story of the ‘hangin’ tree’. I was neither shocked nor was I particularly impressed. I saw no reason to dwell on the subject. I accepted the story as a factual part of a painful and regretful era in this country.
