Texas gives $125 million to rural sheriffs and prosecutors
The 2023 legislation establishing the grant program also includes new equipment for rural sheriffs. Texas has awarded $125 million in grants to rural sheriffs and prosecutors across the state, the Texas Comptroller said in a statement last week – an effort to help those law enforcement agencies attract and keep talent in their communities.

Pre-Civil War Fayette County, Texas counted on slave labor to assist with the production of corn, tobacco, wool, and cotton. The region was home to 3,786 slaves out of a total population of 11,604. These slaves had the legal status of personal property; they were subjected to being bought and sold, hired out, and mortgaged. No rights to marry, have a family, own property, or free themselves existed.

Sealy softball rolling early
The Sealy High School softball team has gotten off to a great start as they surged to a 2-0 record February 15 with a 10-0 win against Jersey Village. Key performers were Jade Barton and Hannah Diemer, who each had two hits. Other big time performers were Jaylyn Packebush and Blair Kram with two RBI’s each, along with Caylee Syzdek, Katie Eder, and Avery Grigar, who all had one RBI each.
